For a second summer, COVID-19 stopped some of metro Detroit’s largest, in-person LGBTQ Pride celebrations from taking place in June, which is Pride Month. But later this year, the community will get back to celebrating their identities and honoring the history of queer liberation together.
While organizers of certain Pride events, including Ypsilanti Pride and Holland Pride, held in-person celebrations in June, organizers of other Pride events felt it was best to hold virtual events in June and reschedule their in-person Pride celebrations for later in the year. Motor City Pride, which has a $5 admission fee, per day, will take place Sept. 18-19 at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit. Ferndale Pride 10th Anniversary (Again) will take place on Oct. 2 on Nine Mile Road off Woodward Avenue and admission is free.
COVID-19 has changed much more about Pride events than just the dates. Organizers are developing measures to ensure attendees can still enjoy the same activities in a COVID-safe manner. Dave Wait, who began volunteering with Motor City Pride more than 20 years ago and is now the chairperson of the organization, shared some of the biggest changes.
