Ferndale Pride 2016 increases street fair size, adds more events
FERNDALE – A larger festival footprint, more vendors and performers, and more related events are planned this year as Ferndale Pride returns for its 6th year on Saturday, June 4.
More than 100 vendors, as well as 8 bands, disc jockeys and other performers, will converge on downtown Ferndale for the annual street fair. In addition to the festivities on West Nine Mile Road between Woodward Avenue and Planavon Street, the street fair has expanded to include a portion of West Troy Street near Allen Street. Also, 13 related events are planned before, during and after Ferndale Pride this year.
The annual family friendly street fair draws thousands of members of the LGBTQA community and to celebrate diversity and unity.
Proceeds from Ferndale Pride benefit Affirmations, Ferncare Free Clinic, Ferndale Community Foundation, Matrix Human Services MAC Health and Transgender Michigan.
Pre-pride events will include the Hot Daddies contest from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday, May 27, at Soho, 205 W. Nine Mile Road. The contest will feature men age 35 or older competing for the title of hottest. Bring your dollars to vote for the hottest daddy and raise money for Ferndale Pride’s charities.
Ferndale Pride’s All Media Art Exhibition will open from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at the Pittmann-Puckett Art Gallery at Affirmations, 290 W. Nine Mile Road.
Ferndale Pride’s main event, the street fair Saturday, June 4, will run from 1 to 10 p.m. Admission is free for the fair. Vendors will line the streets selling food, beverages and goods, as well as providing information. Numerous downtown restaurants and merchants will provide promotions and specials.
Two stages will be turning out metro Detroit musical acts. The dance stage’s lineup will include Detroit Music Awards winner DJ Maestro and Octavia. The main stage will be a mix of genres, including, For Ghosts, Katie Stanley, Scarlet Lies,and this year’s headliner – Sick of Sarah.
After-pride events for Sunday, June 5, will begin as the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce presents its annual Rainbow Run, which includes 5-kilometer and 2-kilometer running/walking routes. New this year is a 2-kilometer Canine Color Walk. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with run/walk start times staggered by category. For more information and to register, visit www.rainbow-run.com.
A full day of free events also will be presented Sunday, June 5, as part of Transgender Day of Empowerment from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Affirmations.
Also Sunday, June 5, Rosie O’Grady’s Drag Queen and King Brunch will offer shows starting at 1 and 3 p.m. at Rosie’s, 279 W. Nine Mile Road.

Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4 – Free, confidential sexually transmitted disease and rapid HIV testing at Affirmations provided by the Oakland County Health Division.
Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4 – Summer Arts & Crafts Bazaar hosted by Affirmations’ Youth Workforce Development Program.
Noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 4 – RECESS Store, Lounge and Café operated by the Affirmations’ Youth Workforce Development Program and offering a beach/summer fun theme.
2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 4 – Level One Bank presents Get Married at Ferndale Pride. Tie the knot in Level One Bank’s art gallery, 22635 Woodward Ave. The ceremony will be performed by clergy of various faiths and Ferndale Mayor David Coulter. 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 4 – Free Youth HIV and syphilis testing for anyone ages 13 to 20 during Pride Prom: Masquerade in the Stars at Affirmations.
6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 4 – Pride Prom: Masquerade in the Stars at Affirmations. The Youth Leadership Development Program will host this free event. Pride Prom is open to people ages 13 to 20. There will be a DJ, snacks, snow cone machine, popcorn and raffle prizes.
June 18 to July 10 – Slipstream Theatre Initiative, 460 Hilton Road, presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Set in a glamorous gay bar in the 1980s, Shakespeare’s classic gets a fabulous twist with an all-male cast, featuring everyone’s favorite characters. Tickets are $12, in advance only.
